  1. The buried ruins of Pompeii are considered one of the greatest archeological discoveries of all time. Research what happened that fateful day in 79 AD when the volcano, Mount Vesuvius, erupted and Pompeii was destroyed. What was life like for the typical citizen of Pompeii and what discoveries have been made that teach us about their culture, religion, art, and social class distinctions?

  2. What roles did women play in Roman society, and what rights did they have?
  3. How did Romans entertain themselves at home (board games, toys, family activities…)?
  4. How did Romans entertain themselves in public (ex. theatre, chariot races, gladiator fights…)?
  5. What importance did the Roman forum have as a place to exchange ideas?
  6. What was a typical Roman family like (roles of each person in the household, daily routine by each person…)?
  7. How were children viewed in society? Did they receive education or training?
  8. What crops did Romans grow, and how did they grow them (agricultural methods, tools, irrigation…)?
  9. What foods did the Romans eat and what methods did they use to prepare them?
  10. How was the Roman social system/levels organized? Address the plebeians and patricians?
  11. What role did slaves have in Roman society?
  12. What role did the public markets (Trajan’s market) play in Roman commerce? How were goods bought, sold, bartered, or traded?
  13. What were some of the most significant Roman occupations, and how did they perform these jobs?
  14. What were the common illnesses and treatments in Rome? Who was responsible for treating the sick?
  15. What role did hygiene play in maintaining health? Specifically, the Roman baths were an important part of their culture. What was their purpose and how were these public baths used?
  16. What was the structure and design (interiors and exteriors) of a typical Roman house?
  17. What was the structure and design (interiors and exteriors) of a wealthy Roman house?
  1. How did Romans travel? What role did the development of roads have in improving travel?
  2. What was the importance of the cisterns and aqueducts to their society? How did these inventions bring fresh water to Roman citizens?
  3. Roman architecture has had a significant impact on today’s public buildings and private homes. The influence of their design is seen in buildings and in cities all over the world. Choose an important building and discuss its history and impact. (ex. Colosseum, Pantheon, Hadrian’s Villa, Nero’s Palace etc…)
  4. The Romans made many contributions in the field of engineering. Choose from the following list and discuss its significance: domes, roads, sewers, arches, hydraulics, and bridges.

  6. The Roman Empire was vast. When conquering a civilization, how did they maintain order and control over so many people?
  1. What kind of art did the Romans produce? What contributions did they make in creating frescoes, mosaics, pottery, and sculpture? What tools and techniques did they use?
