2023 FWCD Summer Reading: Grade 9

Reading Requirements for US Students

Every Upper School student has three summer reading requirements. However, 9th graders read two books to complete those three requirements. The Universal Book and the grade-level required reading both use Station Eleven as their text. Details are below.

  1. Universal Book: This is an all US read that brings unity to our community. Students will read, complete an assigned journal, and participate in the Universal Book Program in the Fall.
  2. Student Choice Book: Students will read a book from the choice books list and participate in discussions about this book in the Fall.
  3. Grade-Level Required Reading for English Class: Students will complete an English assignment.

Universal Book Information

Station Eleven by Emily St. John Mandel was chosen by the Reading Committee to be the 2023 Universal Book for FWCD's Upper School.

9th Grade students will be expected to do the following:

  1. Obtain their copy of Station Eleven (rising 9th graders will receive their book from Mrs. Blan in their English classes, and new students from Mrs. Wakeland).
  2. Read Station Eleven and complete the assigned journal during the summer. (For 9th graders this journal is the grade level required English journal.)
  3. Participate in the Universal Book Program and breakout sessions - August 30.
