Evaluating Online Sources

Google is useful for preliminary research. When using Google for research, SIFT!

Stop:

  • Do you trust the source giving the information? If it is an opinion piece, Google the author and find out their biases.

Investigate the source:

  • Know what you are reading. Read laterally (open new tabs) to find out if this is a trustworthy source. (Who funds this source?)

Find better coverage:

  • Is this the right source for your information or could you possibly find it in a better source? Don't be quick to click!

Trace the original context:

  • Find it in its original context. If an article says, The New York Times reports ... then find it in The New York Times!
